Viewfield Garden Collective
This is a garden project for disadvantaged adults and adults at risk in Skye & LochalshWe grow plants, and we help to grow people
Viewfield Garden Collective is a charity that operates a therapeutic garden project in Portree, on the beautiful Isle of Skye, supporting adults living with mental health difficulties. It aims to provide a relaxed and friendly space to educate, promote citizenship and create opportunities to improve physical and mental health and wellbeing.
What we do
We use horticulture, creative arts and the environment as a means to support and develop our volunteers and work to enable them to be better connected in the wider community and workplace.
Public visitors are welcome to explore the garden and path network throughout the year.
Please remember to visit the produce shed and support the Collective’s work by purchasing fresh produce.
Who we support
We support adults at risk, including those
- experiencing mental health difficulties
- experiencing social isolation and exclusion
- from disadvantaged circumstances
- with health and social care needs
- living with long-term conditions
Due to the terraced nature of the garden, volunteers must have good mobility. At Viewfield Garden Collective we have limited staffing and currently cannot offer one-to-one supervision. We therefore encourage those with support needs to come with their carer, support worker or family member. Our induction process will help us assess volunteers’ needs.
The garden offers a supportive, safe and relaxed place to meet regularly, engage in meaningful activity, develop interests, skills and knowledge, and gain recognised qualifications. Additional benefits include developing positive intergenerational relationships, confidence, independence, self-esteem, fitness, planning skills, pride in one’s work and respect for others.
Come visit us
Our kitchen garden is a peaceful oasis hidden away on the outskirts of Portree, on the Isle of Skye. If approaching Portree from the South of the Island take the left hand turn opposite the petrol station. You will see signs to Viewfield House and Skye Shrubs. Halfway up the drive take the right hand turn and you will find us next to Skye Shrubs.
Please note that parking is restricted and we recommend visiting on foot.
